This is my favorite video of a classic simple synth being made to sound like an expensive modern offering. Talent trumps technology.
I appreciate that 😎☮️
I remember reading somewhere that the connection problem between the two coil boards was fixed! Now I'm seeing more threads about this issue on SD-1s...guess it was just a matter of time before the problem surfaced 🤪
The SD-1 did not repair the looming "keyboard calibration" fault, as it too is prone to suffer from it eventually. The SD-1 adds some piano waves, one more FX algo, more polyphony and (if it is the actual SD-1 and not an upgraded VFX-SD) you get different DAC's with much more high-end information and clarity. However - I feel the best SD-1 is a converted/upgraded VFX-SD, as I prefer the fuzzier and darker sonic character to the VFX.
Cool! Thanks for the info. So far so good with my SD-1...I believe they *are* more reliable than the VFX, but both synths are worth having IMHO 😎☮️
Please tell me you have your songs on somewhere

@bphillips06 Google is making it very hard for me to post replies here. Every time I post something here, it will be confirmed, but then vanishes after a page reload. And rechecking a few hours later, the posts are gone. Next try here: send me your email address so I can send you the SysEx files. They are so small, I could send them by morse code or smoke signals, haha.
Very, very good demo. Nice playing. You could have been de demo seq disk composer. I adore my SD1/32. It has been with me for more than 25 years. Among all other synths and soft-instruments it will always play a major role cause of its creative quality. It will be my last synth if every other one has exploded. I have upgraded my unit with a floppy emulator (based on a Gotek drive with added OLED display and other firmware) all 35 disks are on a USB stick inside the emulator. Works great! Loading AND saving. In the past I've been working closely together with the former Dutch Ensoniq distributor, so got access to all disks, including the SEQ OS ones. Great to have them on an USB stick now. Keep making these nice videos!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I recently acquired a TS12 to add to my Ensoniq collection - it's another winner and deserves its own video. I still have to explore it more, and probably expand the sample RAM so I can load some of my ASR10 samples into it. It's always great to meet another Ensoniq fan. You can always post links here whenever you have something to share. Cheers! ☮️😎
Had two of these back in 1989!… Love them to bits!
It's definitely on my "Do Not Sell" list! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 😎☮️
Sounds so siq 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
wow, looks great, sounds like shit
Amazing demo and synth! Im really planning to buy it as my first synth ever... Loved the wavetable and its unique samples, i can imagine myself already using it... I like that kind of early "unrealistic" acoustic samples, it reminds me of Fairlight stuff, its awesome!
Cool! I do like the overall sound, much more than the Virtual Analogue synths out there. It'll make a great first synth 😎 Enjoy! ☮️
Fantastic!
Super musique,on se croirait presque dans les années 70❤
What no-one remembers "Vision On"?
Ah! Thank you 😎☮️
Beautiful instrument.
The K2000 is amazing. I got mine for nearly $2000 in the late 90s. I sold almost all of my keyboards (like my beloved Alesis Andromeda A6, Roland Juno-60 and SH-101) but still kept the K2K. It's that good.
Interesting! That's quite a line-up of synths you sold 😎 But, yeah, the K2K does cover so much sonic territory. Thanks for taking the time to comment. ☮️
Thank you! God!!
Just let me know if you have any questions...😎☮️

Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to watch, listen and comment. You can see how useful the pedal is on pretty much any keyboard/synth. Peace

Thank you so much for this! Wonderful keyboards, as long as you avoid the terrible clap drum sound they have 😅
Lol! But they're still fun, musical keyboards! You should check out my other Casio videos... Peace
This is a terrific demo! You are so knowledgeable about the instrument and so capable as a player that this demo has value as entertainment in its own right. Great job!
Thank you so much! I try to show the instrument in the best-possible light. It's actually quite inspiring to play!! Appreciate you taking the time to watch, listen and comment. Peace
Hello. What is the sound used at 12:06? Is this in the KVP FARM/ROM files , custom or from a library? I have a K2600XS and I'm looking for a program like that for a project I'm working on.
It's a custom patch using three layers. Basically, I delay the sound of layers 2/3 by an amount that creates the rhythm I want. So as you strike the key, it plays Layer 1, then Layer 2, then Layer 3. I'm sure the K2600XS will have this feature... Good luck!
@@geerefamilyusaahhhh interesting. So are the keymaps/samples between layers 1-3 the same or different?
I *believe* they are all the same keymap, but transposed a few steps so each layer triggers a different percusiion sound. I'll check later...@@ChurchBoy0487
Just bought a Kurzweil last year, a PC4 with VAST/FM/KVA it is incredible how little it has changed, these tutorials are not that different. VAST has remained mostly the same, no reason to change it any more than changing a typical subtractive analog synth architecture. After pushing through all the frustrations of learning this synth from the manual, yesterday, I finally got through my first patch. A 5 layer program with 4 KVA layers and 1 keymap layer. 4 effects (reverb, delay, phasing, chorus), CC pedal control of filter, pedal switch for a key range separated arpeggiator. I was shocked how easy it is to overload the preamp section of the audio output. The levels of all 5 layers needed to be turned down into the -45 range to prevent digital horrible distortion. I sure hope the months of research and study and trial and error programming has not been for nothing. The CC pedal assigned to the filter, was corrupting the program too, and it is all Kurzweil manufactured pedals. ??????????
Little has changed and mostly the same? There was no Cascade to 32 Layers, no Dynamic V.A.S.T., no integrated DX-7 FM engine, no KVA... There was Live Mode in the K2500S and K2600S which has disappeared, Vocoder Mode which is not there anymore. There's a ton that has been improved but many things with Live Mode have gone.
"Cascade to 32 layers" 🤯
@@geerefamilyusa Indeed. That's like 10 times the length of a Triple Mode ALG on the K2600!
This is a really cool patch!
Thanks! You can have a lot of fun with it...
I've got one of these beauties . A gift from a great Auntie. I've enjoyed it tremendously. Lately I noticed that the sounds. " Stacked , Digi Moods , I'm alive, Soft Words, Actric, Apollo, red Sky, Raium, Zirconia, Star Drive are no where to be found. Any ideas on how they can be accessed?
I'm not sure about those particular patches...let me check for you...
Still looking for them? I might be able to help you out. I recognize almost all of them and got them on file.
@@MikeHageman Still on the hunt .. No luck with the floppys I have here. So I'm all ears.
@@bphillips06 OK, does it help if I send you SysEx files with the sounds/soundbanks? Are you able to send the system exclusive data via MIDI / SysEx uploader to your SD1? I use SysEx Librarian for Mac, which works great.
@@MikeHageman I have a Mac and a Boss 202 Loop Station with MIDI. so that should work as a viable pass through
Do you have any details on the patches in the intro ? particularly the string sound at 1:32 is it a preset in your machine? if so can you tell me the algo and base waveforms (s) its using so I can try an recreate it ?
They are custom patches. Basically, I'm using a variable foot controller to modulate a bunch of parameters in real time. You can get such pedals for $20-30. I recommend them because you can play two-handed and still control your mods :-) If you're interested, I can email you a zip file of some of the patches in the video. Let me know at Synthdude101@gmail.com Peace
Om 🎉grande saund la migliore 🎉
I just bought one in a pawn shop for 50 bucks!
Deep, fantastic demonstraton! Congrat! 👍 Ensoniq made brilliant synths against nowday manufacturers.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment. I'm a big Ensoniq fan...perhaps I should do an Ensoniq Family Video...?? (I've been super busy recently :/)
@@geerefamilyusa Big Ensoniq fan myself. Had an ESQ-1 for a while and also an SQ2 (original 21-voice version) that I purchased from an Ensoniq sound designer. (I am originally from the western suburbs of Philadelphia so Ensoniq was practically in my backyard.) The folks at Ensoniq kindly upgraded it to 32-voice and maxed the sequencer memory for me. After I sold that (having upgraded to a Yamaha Motif 8) I missed it and so acquired a couple of SQRs. Eventually picked up a TS-12 (which I still have) which was kind of the ultimate development of the line that the SD1 was part of. I kinda wish they hadn't kept changing their naming conventions; it gets kind of confusing. The SQ 1 and SQ 2 are not really part of the line of the ESQ-1 but the SQ-80 is. And then it goes VFX to VFX-SD to SD1 to SD1-32 voice to TS 10 and TS 12...And the MR and ZR series are different from the earlier ones and the Fizmo is really not all that different from the MR and despite its name is not the "PHYSical MOdeling synth that it was originally supposed to be. (The Halo isn't really even an Ensoniq; it's an E-Mu product that they slapped an Ensoniq badge on. I feel no love for the very ironically-named Creative Labs for essentially destroying two great synth companies.) But I guess if Ensoniq's marketing strategy of renaming their products as if they were completely new (when they really weren't...all that much) helped them sell more synths and helped keep them afloat, I can't really blame them. They were up against some pretty stiff competition. The irony is, I don't think they really needed to do that because Ensoniqs really don't sound like anything else and in my opinion they had already carved out their own unique place in the synth world. In addition, I always found their sequencer among the best in terms of ease of use. Ensoniq gave you a lot of instrument for the money and I really miss them and wish they were still around.
Love to have one in mint condition, but the jump from used VFX to SD-1 is quadruple! 200 vs 800!!! At that point, I've lost the interest in vintage wave table synth. LOL.
I totally get that. Prices are insane these days! I got my SD-1 under market value because the display doesn't read correctly. But it didn't really hinder the programmability to me. I love the Ensoniq sound - always on the lookout for a bargain. I just picked up a *mint* TS-12 for $500 inc free shipping, which I thought was a decent price. Please check out my VFX-SD video, it might give you some ideas :-) Peace
Скільки коштував на той час новий Casio HT-6000
Late 1984 as is JX-8P
Yup! Did you see my JX8P demo by any chance? LOVE that synth. Peace (been a bit busy latelty:/)
Beautiful and underrated synth from the heroic times of Italian electronical industry. Jean Michel Jarre admitted he still has and keeps his collection of Elkas Syntex, that tells us all something...
Quite! So glad you could enjoy this synth as much as I. Peace. (been a bit busy lately :/)
Excellent playing! Went to hear what these sound like and was pleasantly surprised!
Always liked Ensoniq such a shame they went bust, loved the ESQ1 though ridiculous prices now where I live for something 30+ years old that could break down anytime and haven't really got the energy or space, but the SD-1 still is a beautiful looking and sounding machine, but will likely stick to vst's and my Komplete A61 much less space needed and hassle.
Sick
The SD-1 is an extremely underrated synthesizer. It's dirty secret and it's power lies in the DSP effects. It has plenty of limitations, lack of resonance being the primary one, but it offers so much more in its modulation capabilities to make up for it. The onboard sequencer which enables step recording expands the creative possibilities!. For a digital synthesizer of the time it had a lot of analog-ish features such as repeating envelopes, a plethora of modulation capabilities, six voices each with three envelopes and two filters, model mode where one of them emulates a moog style. One of the stock patches is an 808 patch which sounds nothing like that Roland 808 but it's got its own distinct characteristic and is really meaty. Combining two filters -- (Again available to each of the six voices) -- allows creating bandpass high pass, and if tune correctly allows for extremely sharp roll offs. When sequencing, each patch has the capability of being routed to external auxiliary outputs, meaning you can use external effects with it or ride it through an external filter that is resonating. One can also completely open up the on-board filters, to realize the rich harmonics for the conventional waveforms IE triangle saw square... It made me realize and take a second look at wave table synthesis.
Great comment! All true. 😎♥️
I bought a VFXsd ver. II (21 voice) new in the 90's. After a decade it was lost to hardware failure. Years later I found an SD-1/32 on eBay for $500 and I've had it ever since. Keep an eye on the power supply as they sometimes fail. Nothing sounds like that synth! I also have a K2000r updated to K2Vx spec w/ a nice bright blue LCD display replacement. Both are classics that I will never part with!
Thanks for the power supply tip! I'm a big Ensoniq fan - have you seen my VFX-SD video? Also, I did a K2000 demo too... Appreciate you taking the time to comment! (Been a bit busy lately :/)

If you still respond to comments, how did you make the patch at 2:40 ? I have one of my own and I really love that sound. Mind giving some insight unto this?
I can check the patch later, but from memory - I had a bunch of mod parameters (pitch, filter cutoff, reverb depth etc) assigned to the foot controller. This means you can have crazy mods set up and still play two-handed! I lost a bunch of patches when my internal batteries died, but some were backed up on floppy. Let me check...
